CONFIDENTLY CREATE GARMENTS THAT FIT

•••  BY YOURSELF  •••

WITHOUT CONFUSION, FRUSTRATION AND DISAPPOINTMENT

As an experienced sewist who wants to create beautifully fitting garments that look and feel good, you already know that you need to make adjustments to your sewing patterns.

You've already got some good fitting books, watched loads of fitting tutorials and attended several in-person fitting workshops, so altering sewing patterns certainly isn't new to you.

You've even identified your go-to fitting fixes and adopted a few fitting methods that seem to work and have been able to achieve some fitting success using what you've learned.

Even though you've experienced some success with those go-to fitting fixes and fit as you sew solutions

YOU'RE READY TO LEARN HOW TO FIT

So you can...
  • BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE
Imagine starting a new sewing project without the fear of a fitting failure. You quickly and easily choose the right pattern size and know exactly how to adjust it to fit you. You get a wearable first sample with only a few fitting tweaks to take care of before you cut into that beautiful piece of fabric that you've been saving for just the right project.
  • BRING BACK THE JOY OF SEWING
Leave the guilt and disappointment of failed sewing projects in the long ago past and fall in love with sewing again. Your fitting knowledge gives you the power to adjust the pattern before you sew, so you already know the garment will fit before you finish it.
  • BOOST YOUR CREATIVITY
Creating a pattern that fits means you can get creative with it. Change the neckline or the sleeves, add special details, experiment with embellishments. You become your own designer, creating garments you truly love and reflect your personal style.
  • FEEL A TRUE SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT
Few things are more satisfying than opening the closet door to a wardrobe of beautiful hand made garments that are comfortable to wear, flatter your shape and are completely unique to you. Each piece, created by you, is a favourite and evokes feelings of accomplishment and pride.

The benefits of learning HOW TO FIT are clear, but the path to doing it successfully is not.

You're determined to conquer your fitting challenges. You've got your fitting books within easy reach, you've taken all the advice on how to choose your size, made your "standard" adjustments and committed to making a sample to test the fit.
With the sample sewn, you take a quick look in the mirror (with your fingers crossed) and hope the fit isn't too bad. Sometimes you get lucky and can overlook the minor issues, other times, you just want to give up. But you persevere.
You scour your fitting books and Youtube trying to match your wrinkles to the ones described there, asking yourself questions like "Do I have a rounded back or a protruding shoulder blade?" and "Do I have narrow shoulders or a full bust?".
You sew several more samples in hopes of solving those issues only to find that you have a pile of unwearable fitting samples and you feel more confused than when you started.
Here's why your sewing time is dominated by endless rounds of fitting samples:
Without a super clear, step by step fitting process, most sewists are lost and confused. Even those with years of sewing experience fall victim to diagnosing their "figure flaws", searching for fast and easy fixes and trying to read the wrinkles.
This is what makes fitting so frustrating.
As an experienced sewist who just wants to make classic, comfortable and good fitting clothes, you don't want to keep wasting time, money and fabric on making sample after sample that doesn't fit or flatter you.
The cycle of "figure flaw" identification, wrinkle translation and Youtube searches is demotivating and exhausting. You need a better plan.
Thankfully there is a way to skip this endless cycle and transform the way you think about fitting...if you're willing to challenge what you've been lead to believe.

THREE FITTING MYTHS

THAT ARE KEEPING YOU FRUSTRATED

MYTH #1

Fitting is Fast and Easy

You probably have at least one fitting book on your shelf with the words FAST or EASY in the title and I'm pretty sure you discovered quite quickly that these words don't apply to fitting. You've likely been taught that sewing is the most important part of the garment making process and fitting is just the thing that stands between you and your enjoyment of sewing, so you must get through it quickly.
Fitting isn't fast and easy but taking the necessary time to achieve a good fit will guarantee a joyful sewing experience.
The truth is good fit starts with the pattern and altering it to fit you takes time and skill. Fitting only becomes easy with knowledge, practice and experience.

MYTH #2

You Can Fit as You Sew

At some point you likely dove head first into cutting a pattern in your fashion fabric with generous seam allowances so you can "fabric fit" your project. Take a little in, let a little out and you're good to go, right?
Not likely. Unless your body proportions and shape are the same as the body the pattern was designed for, that project probably ended up in a charity shop.
The truth is good fit is about shape and measurement combined. So making dimensional changes to the outer edges of the garment won't solve for the majority of your fitting issues.

MYTH #3

Your "Figure Flaws" are the Problem

You've been taught that as long as you identify your "figure flaws" you've got a clear answer to how to make a sewing pattern fit you. If you can just change the pattern to reflect your "rounded back", "large bust" or "sway back", you'll have it all solved. You've been lead to believe that the standard solution to those "figure flaws" will work for everyone.
No. You're unique in every way, so those common fitting issues are just that, common, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are your fitting issues or that you should solve them in exactly the same way.
The truth is achieving a good fit may require some unconventional pattern adjustments that you'll likely never see in any fitting book or free video tutorial.

Here's the Good News...

You'll learn the exact strategies I use to fit my own garments but more importantly you'll walk away with a step by step process that you can use on any sewing pattern.

FITTING ESSENTIALS

is the ONLY program of its kind that…
  • Demonstrates the step by step process of altering a sewing pattern to fit you which solves the majority of fitting issues before you sew.
  • Teaches you a proven method of assessing fit that doesn't rely solely on your ability to "read the wrinkles".
  • Builds on your fitting knowledge with information collected from the sewing pattern that you can use on future projects.
  • Keeps you focused on fitting the pattern instead of identifying and solving for your "figure flaws".
If you’re ready to finally create garments that fit without frustration and disappointment

HERE'S HOW YOU'LL GET THERE...

STEP ONE

STYLE ANALYSIS

THE DESIGN DETAILS THAT MAKE FITTING EASIER

We'll review the design details that make fitting easier and look at some examples of how designers cleverly disguise fitting elements in their designs in a way that keeps the garment fit intact.
You'll review your own pattern stash so you can learn to recognize the fitting elements that will work best for you and I'll introduce you to the KAYLA sewing pattern that I designed specifically for this course so you can decide on the view you'll be working on throughout the lessons.
By the end of this module you'll understand why some of your sewing projects were doomed to fail from the start and how you can choose styles that are designed with fitting elements that you can use to your advantage.
Highlights:
  • Learn about the design details that will make fitting easier.
  • Practice recognizing the fitting elements that work for you.
  • Get an introduction to the sewing pattern that I've specifically designed for you to work on throughout the course.

STEP TWO

SIZING ANALYSIS

DETERMINE THE BEST PATTERN SIZE TO START WITH

With the style carefully selected it's time to choose your size. Starting with the right size can reduce the number and complexity of the pattern alterations you need to make. I'll show you three ways to choose your size and how to break a tie if you have one.
By the end of this module you'll be able to choose your best pattern size to start with (from any size chart) and begin planning your pattern fitting adjustments.
Highlights:
  • Take your body measurements (by yourself) and record them on the new Pattern Measurement Worksheet.
  • Use the Choose Your Size Worksheet to ensure you pick the best size to start with.
  • Determine your potential fitting adjustments based on your selected pattern size.

STEP THREE

PATTERN ANALYSIS

GET A CLEAR PICTURE OF THE DESIGNER'S FIT INTENT

Once you've chosen your ideal starting size I'll show you how to reveal the design and wearing ease intended by the pattern designer and how to use the information to get the intended look and silhouette on your body (and how to change it if you choose).
By the end of this module you'll know exactly what you need to do to adjust the pattern to fit your body measurements and desired ease.
Highlights:
  • Prepare the Kayla sewing pattern for analysis.
  • Measure the pattern and calculate the optimal ease.
  • Outline all the fitting changes you'll need to make to the pattern.

STEP FOUR

INITIAL PATTERN ADJUSTMENTS

MAKE THE PATTERN ADJUSTMENTS VIRTUALLY EVERYONE NEEDS

Take what you learned from the pattern analysis process and begin your pattern alterations. Here's where you'll get a step by step walk through of the initial, length, contour, width and girth adjustments you'll need and the order they must be done.
By the end of this module you'll have solved for the most commonly misdiagnosed fitting issues before you see your first sample.
Highlights:
  • Make your initial pattern adjustment plan using the Pattern Adjustment Worksheet.
  • Perform the initial pattern adjustments you need on your pattern.
  • Check and refine your altered pattern for trouble free sewing.

STEP FIVE

SAMPLE ASSESSMENT

PREPARE A FITTING SAMPLE AND ASSESS THE FIT

Once the pattern is adjusted, checked and refined you're ready to test the fit. This is a necessary step in the fitting process that refines the fit for your body's unique shape.
By the end of this module you'll have a sample of your garment and know exactly how to assess the fit all on your own.
Highlights:
  • Cut, sew and prepare for your fitting assessment.
  • See a "real life" example of how to fit yourself and assess personal fit issues without a fitting buddy with guidance from the Fitting Checklist.
  • Get guidance on how to Read the Wrinkles and a step by step plan to Making Your Own Fit Assessment.

STEP SIX

PATTERN REFINEMENT

TRANSFER FITTING CHANGES TO THE PATTERN

Now it's time to take what you've learned from the sample assessment and further refine the fit of the pattern. Here's where we'll go through the final pattern alterations that you'll need for a garment that truly fits. We'll focus on the fitting issues that will often show up at this stage and I'll share the best ways to solve them.
By the end of this module you will have transferred all your fitting changes to the pattern and be ready for a final fitting. You'll also have learned how to solve for a multitude of fitting issues in some rather unconventional ways.
Highlights:
  • Learn how to transfer fitting changes from the sample to the pattern.
  • Learn new and unconventional ways of managing pattern shape.
  • Check, refine and finalize your pattern for fitting success.

STEP SEVEN

FITTING SUCCESS

CELEBRATE YOUR FITTING SUCCESS

Here we celebrate and share the results of all the skills and knowledge you've gained. I'll share my final Kayla shirt makes, you'll share yours and we'll discuss how you can use this pattern (that fits) to create new style variations.
By the end of this module you'll realize that you've learned HOW TO FIT. The knowledge and skills you've gained have given you the ability to recognize, assess and solve your own fitting issues.
Highlights:
  • You have a pattern that fits you and a start on that beautiful wardrobe you've been dreaming of.
  • You have the confidence to approach any fitting project using the Fitting Essentials process.
  • You are ready to experiment with style variations on your pattern.
